Why Yashua?

Many may wonder why I use the Messiah's (Mashiach) name, "Yashua". Please allow me to provide a brief history & aleph-bet exposition:
1) There were no "J"s in the English language until 900 years ago. There were only "I"s used where we now see J's, and usually placed at the end of a word. J's as the first letter in a word in our language only appeared over 500 years ago.
2) There have NEVER been any J's in the Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek alphabets. The original Greek transliteration of the Messiah's name, Iesous, evolved like this:

My thanks to Plim.org for their excellent article: http://www.plim.org/JesusOrigin.htm

3) Using English letter equivalents, "Yah" is the root name of God in the Hebrew Covenant (See Ps 68:4). "YHVH" are the letters used most often for God's name, hence YaHoVaH, or YaHVeH. There ARE NO vowels in the Hebrew aleph-bet, translators insert them as a matter of hierarchal pronunciation.
4) So, actually, our Savior's name is properly said, "Yahshua", which in essence means our "Creator God is our salvation". His proper name states His person, His position and His mission.

I, myself, have had a hard time undoing years of Western bias and tradition...and still do. We just don't realize how much pervades our thinking and influences our philosophies & beliefs. It is only through the teaching & guidance of the Spirit of Holiness (Ruach ha' Kodesh), that we begin to know the truth of God our Savior in Yahshua.
"But when that One comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will announce the coming things to you." John 16:13
I implore you to search the Scriptures for yourself. Allow the Spirit to teach you, even when our carnal nature fights against the things of God. YHVH, Yahshua will give you Peace that passes all understanding, yet you will know Him unlike ever before...
Blessings in Yahshua's name.

On Hiatus, yet not faithless

Dear Readers,
I've taken a break this week for a variety of reasons: 1) It's time for spring lawn & garden preparation, 2) Kitchen renovation underway, 3) Mostly 'cause, I get tired of bad news too...
I've been warning of this tsunami for years in my own private way. I began publishing my thoughts online 6-7 years ago, and then here on this site last fall. I pray by some meager means I have helped or reached someone to come to Yashua the Mashiach (Jesus the Christ).
I'm not about religion. I'm not a religious person at all. In fact, I detest religion as we commonly know it. It is a burden, a yoke, and a blinder keeping people from the saving knowledge of GOD.
Truly, throughout history, it is the lack of faith in Yashua and mankind's own sinfulness which leads to destruction, misery & hopelessness. Any form of "religion" on man's part just compounds the malaise.
What is "sin"? It's a word the unregenerate mind hates to hear. These minds revulse at the mere mention of it. They want no part in considering it. Sin is our inherent rebellion against Almighty God, and our "missing the mark" of His righteousness. The Ten Commandments are akin to the high bar set at 100 feet in the air. No jumper or pole vaulter in the world can make or clear the bar in their own strength. Anyone who says they have or do is lying, pure & simple. The world's evidence of sin is & has been all around us and in us; murder, crime, envy, lust, thievery, debauchery, on & on. I too fall short each & every day, no matter how hard I try. Thank God the Father that Yashua the Son did it for me. Now, the life I live is gratitude for the price paid to clear that bar in my stead.
"For YHVH so loves the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone believing, [trusting] in Him SHALL not perish, but SHALL be having eternal life!" John 3:16
"For to me to live is Mashiach (Christ), and to die is gain."
Phil 1:21

We see our world in turmoil, a powder keg waiting to explode into utter chaos. One hair trigger away from collapse as we know it. The spiritual void around the world grows day by day. Economies, political & educational systems, social orders, businesses, homes & families are all poised over a precipice of doom, gloom & despair. Praise YHVH for our hope in Yashua.
The world is looking for a Savior, it always has been since time began. A Savior to rescue us from ourselves and our own destruction. Many don't even realize they're looking, they find their solace in wealth, religion, in alcohol, drugs or whatever temporal substitute they may embrace. Yet, in the end, none of it satisfies the emptiness of the human soul. Our Creator alone fills this void.
"YHVH declares, I will put My law in their inward parts, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." Jer 31:33
I cannot make you see as YHVH sees, or change your heart & mind as only He can, this is a supernatural work of His Spirit. At best, I am an unworthy vessel of clay in the Potter's hands.
"O YHVH, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter, and we all are the work of Your hands." Is 64:8
In these days and the ones ahead, our first & foremost acts can only be repentance & prayer to Him. No other options will have any effect upon ourselves or our nation. No bailout, no stimulus, no government program, no charismatic leader, nor any other person or action can redeem our souls from the wages of our sin.
"By the name of Yashua the Messiah from Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead...Neither is there salvation or deliverance by any other: for there is NO other name under Heaven, or on Earth, given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:10-12
Let your prayer & repentance & faith to Yashua begin today...

"Even the experts don't quite know what's going on."

"And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. And when they were come, they say to him, Master, we know that you are true, and care for no man: for you regard not the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute (taxes) to Caesar, or not? Shall we give, or shall we not give? But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, Why do you test me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it. And they brought it. And He said to them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said to him, Caesar's. And Yashua answering said to them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to YHWH the things that are YHWH's. And they marveled at Him." Matt 22, Mk 12:13-17, Lk 20

Ya know, it has occurred to me in times past that our Lord Yashua has quite a sardonic sense of humor with us if we really pay attention to his words. For us to realize He knew the outcome of the Roman Empire when He spoke these words, makes it all the more clear what our priorities should be.

In essence all money is printed & distributed by the government, any government; it's theirs, let them keep it & use it for their own purposes. It only has the faith & credibility we give it. If we don't give it, it has none. Faith & credibility are YHWH's alone. Don't put your faith in man or man's institutions. Putting "In God We Trust" on American currency is a lie. Our government doesn't trust YHWH. It's more than self-evident.
Yashua is telling us to let governments have their money. Trust in Him, trade, barter & do what's right & pleasing in His sight, and with whom you're dealing. I've observed this in other countries, and it pleases both buyer & seller moreover.
Remember, governments are ordained by YHWH to keep the lost in check; even though eventually they fail...

Volcker sees crisis leading to global regulation

NEW YORK – "Even the experts don't quite know what's going on."

Speaking to a number of those experts Friday, Paul Volcker, a top economic adviser to President Barack Obama, cited not only the lack of understanding of the global financial meltdown but the "shocking" speed with which it had spread across the world.

"One year ago, we would have said things were tough in the United States, but the rest of the world was holding up," Volcker told a conference featuring Nobel laureates, economists and investors at Columbia University in New York. "The rest of the world has not held up."

In fact, the 81-year-old former chairman of the Federal Reserve said, "I don't remember any time, maybe even the Great Depression, when things went down quite so fast."

He noted that industrial production is falling in countries across the globe faster than in the U.S., one result of the decline caused by the breakdown of unbridled financial markets that operated on a global scale.

"It's broken down in the face of almost all expectation and prediction," he noted.

Volcker didn't offer specifics on how long he thinks the recession will last or what will help start a recovery. But he predicted there will be some lasting lessons from the experience.

"I don't believe it will be forgotten ... and we will revert to the kind of financial system we had before the crisis," he said.

While he assured his audience of his confidence that capitalism will survive, Volcker said stronger regulations are needed to protect the world economy from such future shocks.

And he said he is concerned about the amount of power central banks, treasuries and regulatory agencies have acquired while trying to contain the meltdown.

"It is evident in the United States, and not just in the United States, the central bank is taking on a role that is way beyond what a central bank should be taking," he said.

Volcker stressed the importance of international cooperation in creating a new regulatory framework, particularly for major banks that operate across national boundaries — the reverse of what's happened in recent years.

"The more international agreement we have on where we want to get to, the better off we'll be," Volcker said.

And while major banks should be more tightly controlled and less able to make the sort of risky bets that led to their current debacle, Volcker said there should also be more oversight of some kind for hedge funds, equity funds and the remaining investment banks.

He scoffed at the notion that those entities must be free to innovate — stating that financial "innovations" like asset backed securities and credit default swaps have brought few benefits. The most important "innovation" in banking for most people in the last 20 or 30 years, he maintained, is the automatic teller machine.

Soros sees no bottom for world financial "collapse"

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Renowned investor George Soros said on Friday the world financial system has effectively disintegrated, adding that there is yet no prospect of a near-term resolution to the crisis.

Soros said the turbulence is actually more severe than during the Great Depression, comparing the current situation to the demise of the Soviet Union.

He said the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September marked a turning point in the functioning of the market system.

"We witnessed the collapse of the financial system," Soros said at a Columbia University dinner. "It was placed on life support, and it's still on life support. There's no sign that we are anywhere near a bottom."

His comments echoed those made earlier at the same conference by Paul Volcker, a former Federal Reserve chairman who is now a top adviser to President Barack Obama.

CNBC's Santelli Calls for Chicago Tea Party

Even on a liberally biased network like CNBC, the natives are getting restless. The anger & resentment over our governments' ineptitude and wholesale socialistic redistribution of our incomes & taxes is starting to fester across the land.
The 'Boston Tea Party' was a revolt over a 1 cent tea tax, yet 300 million Americans will swallow $2Trillion & more in borrowed taxes without any major dissent.
We have not begun to see the devastation that will result from our nation's careless & wicked ways. It has always been my contention that America's destructive course began when we took Bible reading & prayer out of our public schools, and made YHWH/Yashua a pariah in our public & private lives. He has held back for over two generations waiting for our repentance, but the floodgates of the dam of our sin's wages are cracking and the entire dam is poised to break.
"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. For whatever a person may sow, that he also will reap." Gal 6:7
America's seeds have long been planted, now the harvest is upon us...

CNBC Analyst Calls for 'Chicago Tea Party'
Santelli Reacts to Obama's economic plans with 'Howard Beale rant' on live TV

With tongue only partially in cheek, a CNBC analyst on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange this morning responded to President Obama's proposed $275 billion deficit-financed homeowner bailout plan and other massive spending measures with a call for a new "tea party."

Rick Santelli, in a nearly three-minute rant that drew approving hoots and comments from nearby traders, said the Obama administration's promotion of bad behavior must be causing the founding fathers to roll over in their graves.

"We're thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July," Santelli told CNBC "Squawk Box" co-anchor Joe Kernan. "All you capitalists who want to show up at Lake Michigan, I'm going to start organizing."

CNBC posted on its website video of Santelli's rant, which some viewers already are comparing to the well-known scene from the movie "Network" in which character Howard Beale stands up in the middle of his newscast and declares, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

"I have an idea – you know, the new administration is big on computers and technology," Santelli said sarcastically. "How about this president and new administration, why don't you put up a website to have people vote on the Internet as a referendum to see if we really want to subsidize the losers' mortgages or would we like to at least buy cars and buy houses in foreclosure and give them to people that might have a chance to actually prosper down the road and reward people that could carry the water instead of drink the water."

An unidentified trader on the floor near Santelli shouted out, "Hey Rick, that's a novel idea."

Co-anchor Kernan tried to humor Santelli, responding to the support from the traders by interjecting, "They're like putty in your hands."

"No they're not, Joe, they're not like putty in our hands. This is America."

Santelli then turned his back to the camera and dramatically asked the traders on the floor, "How many of you people want to pay for your neighbor's mortgage that has an extra bathroom and can't pay their bills? Raise (your) hand."

A large moan went up from the floor as none of the traders appeared to raise their hands.

"President Obama, are you listening?" Santelli asked to the camera.

The unidentified trader to Santelli's right then leaned into the analyst and said loud enough to be picked up on microphone, "How 'bout we all stop paying our mortgages. It's a moral hazard."

Kernan then said, "This is like mob rule here. I'm getting scared."

"Don't get scared, Joe," Santelli responded. "Cuba used to have mansions and a relatively decent economy. They moved from the individual to the collective, now they're driving '54 Chevys, maybe the last great car to come out of Detroit."

After an exchange with another guest, Santelli returned at the end of the segment, referring to the traders as a "pretty good statistical cross-section of America, the silent majority."

"Not-so-silent majority," said co-anchor Becky Quick.

Quick asked Santelli if the traders were opposed to other economic measures from the Obama administration, including the newly approved $787 billion stimulus plan.

"They're pretty much of the notion that you can't buy your way into prosperity," he replied. "And if the multiplier that all of these Washington economists are selling us is … that we never have to worry about the economy again, the government should spend a trillion dollars an hour, because we'll get 1.5 trillion back.

CNBC panelist Wilbur Ross, chairman and CEO of WL Ross & Co., interjected, "Rick, I congratulate you on your new incarnation as a revolutionary leader."

"Somebody needs one," Santelli responded. "I'll tell you what, if you read our founding fathers, people like Benjamin Franklin and Jefferson, what we're doing in this country now is making them roll over in their graves."

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

I suppose I may seem angry to some, sharply critical to others. I've even had a comment or two that I should take up white robe & beard, stand on the street corner with the sign,"REPENT, The End Is Near".
I would ask any & all to not mistake righteous indignation for mean-spiritedness.
My anger is exactly as our Lord's with the money-changers in the Temple, "You have made my house a den of thieves!" Matt 21:13 The thieves in positions of power & leadership in our government & businesses have done the very same thing to my country!
This isn't the America I'd hoped to bestow upon my children & grandchildren! Do you really believe or think America can be proud of who she has become? If you read the news, and understand what is happening across our land, you should be of like mind;
The mind of Christ. I Cor 2:16
As believers in Christ, we should all be highly distraught & more at what we see occurring in every aspect of our society, government, business, our homes, and even our churches.
How far must things go before the Holy Spirit awakens you out of your slumber?
Noe preached & built for 100 years, suffering ridicule, keeping the faith, leading his family day after day, year after year, no matter what the world said or did. But, when the Flood came, he and all his own entered into God's rest & safety of the ark. The Lord Yashua is our ark.
We ARE in perilous times. America is no longer the land of our forefathers. Washington, Jefferson, The Adamses, Franklin, and the rest would be leading a armed revolt if they were here now...they would be beyond indignation & anger.
I challenge everyone & anyone to show me different. If you believe that being a Christian means being a spineless pacifist, you're reading the wrong Bible:
"for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the foreigners. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection." Heb 11:31-35
By the authority of God's Word, I will stand for what I know is right & true. If I perish, I perish.
Sure, I was raised hearing hellfire & brimstone preaching, and I realize that's not popular at all these days. In fact, I can't remember the last time I heard any coming out of our pulpits. But it was the
burden of my sins, and the fires of Hell that sent me running for the Grace of Christ on Calvary. Yashua preached more on Hell than Heaven by far, so there's ample warning of the penalty of rejecting Him. If there's no Hell, then He wouldn't have needed to pay our redemption. So, Hell hasn't disappeared, and sinners still need salvation. And, if you think my message too harsh, then I heartily encourage you to listen or read Jonathan Edwards' sermon,"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" . Our nation is far more wicked than when he first preached this in Enfield, Connecticut on July 8, 1741.
Dear Readers, I often wish I was wrong...but I cannot deny GOD's Word, or the Savior who gave himself for me. "Let GOD be true, and ever person a liar." Rom 3:4
"...so that by all possible means I might save some." I Cor 9:22
Can you think of a better reason to live for Christ?
If you want GOOD NEWS, share the Gospel of Yashua. Otherwise, it ain't pretty...

Does Evolution Matter??? US Churches Compromise

With a resounding YES!!!
Who brainwashes who? Is God true to His Word, or is man the final authority?
For many of my early adolescent & adult years, I wrestled with reconciling the teachings of evolution with God's Word. It wasn't true science that bothered me, but the godless, atheistic philosophy that underlies its presentation. This hidden agenda attempts & succeeds to undermine the truth of God in countless thousands & millions of hearts & minds who have known the Scriptures.
Then, when pastors & teachers have bought into this myth, they corrupt those they minister unto with a lack of knowledge to discern truth from fiction. As an engineer & physicist, I understand this better than most, because I see how the lies are perpetuated. And, then we wonder why our generation and our children are so spiritually & morally shipwrecked...
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children." Hos 4:6
My own childhood pastor was just such a victim of deceit. God struck him & his wife down with quick killing cancers, and they were childless.
"Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time & age will come when people will not endure sound teaching & instruction; but after their own lusts, they will gather themselves to teachers that tickle their ears. They will turn their ears away from the truth, and shall be turned unto myths & fables." II Tim 4:2-4
"Examine yourselves, whether all of you be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know all of you not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except all of you be reprobates?" II Cor 13:5
"Know this also, that in the last days dangerous times shall come. For people shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good: Traitors, rebellious, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof, from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts; ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth...so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith...all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from Whom you have learned them; And that from a child you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." II Tim 3:1-15

US churches to discuss evolution vs creation

Associated Press Writer

After a lifetime in the church, the Rev. William L. Rhines Jr. lately has started to question one of the Bible's fundamental teachings, that God created man. It's an especially touchy topic in his Wilmington, Del., congregation, where generations of black worshippers have leaned on faith to endure the indignities of racism.

But as the world marks the 200th birthday of evolution theorist Charles Darwin on Thursday, Rhines figures its time for even the most conservative congregations to come to terms with science.

The Rev. Thurmond Tillman, pastor at Savannah's 221-year-old First African Baptist Church, poses in the sanctuary of the church, Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 in Savannah, Ga. Tillman doesn't oppose evolution, but he argues that black Americans have other social issues to address, and the faithful should focus on uniting mankind _ not dividing his origins. (AP Photo/Stephen Morton)

"We're becoming more middle class, upper middle class, so we have more free time ... to ponder these eternal issues," said Rhines, who will encourage a discussion at Ezion-Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.

Hundreds of churches this week will revisit the question of whether man evolved from lower order species or was created whole by a higher being as part of Evolution Weekend.

Participation through sermons, Sunday school lessons and even evolution dances has expanded into 974 congregations across the country, more than doubling since the weekend began in 2006, said founder Michael Zimmerman, dean of the college of liberal arts and sciences at Butler University in Indianapolis.

Organizers said the churches include a growing number of conservative groups, among them black and Muslim groups typically linked to more traditional views.

Participants say they're not abandoning the Bible's story of Adam and Eve. Rather, they want to blend theories in a way that helps today's faithful reconcile their modern world with Biblical teachings.

"We have to give God a lot more credit than we give him now — we need to give him the benefit of the doubt that his word includes evolution," said Mike Ghouse, president of the World Muslim Congress, a Dallas-based union of 3,000 Muslims that hosted its first ever Evolution Weekend discussion Friday.

The evolution vs. creation debate has simmered for at least the last 150 years since Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." That volume first suggested populations evolve over generations through a process of natural selection.

Zimmerman argues the faithful can accept parts of creationism — the notion that a higher being created man whole — and evolution.

"Faith is related to one's belief system ... science, on the other hand, is in a different domain," said the Rev. Gerald Kersey, who planned a Sunday school lesson and discussion of Darwin's theories at Avondale Estates First Baptist Church in suburban Atlanta.

He blamed religious intolerance for causing many faithful to feel they must choose between science and the Bible.

"I'm presenting the idea that science or evolution is compatible with faith," he said.

Still, many Americans believe that God created man. A 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion and Public Life found 63 percent of Americans believed humans and other animals have either always existed in their present form or have evolved over time under the guidance of a supreme being.

That percentage is especially high among the nation's black churchgoers, who have been taught for generations to cope with everything from slavery to Jim Crow by using the Bible's teachings, Rhines said.

"We don't want to tamper with what grandma taught us — we've come this far by faith," Rhines said.

At one of the nation's oldest black churches, the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga., the Rev. Thurmond Tillman doesn't oppose evolution.

But he argued black Americans have other social issues to address, and the faithful should focus on uniting mankind — not dividing his origins.

"What we're judged on his how we first relate with Him," Tillman said. "And the test of how we relate with Him is how we relate with one another."

In Case You Missed Darwin's 200th Birthday Celebration

This is a battle of the minds I've enjoined for nearly forty (40) years. In college, I was president of the Bible Science Club (TTU), and charter club/member of the Institute for Creation Research. It's apparent this war will never cease 'til our Lord returns.
Evolutionists' "facts" cannot deny that their evidence is only valid in "micro-evolution", that is, evolution within each of its own "kind" (Gen 1:1-25). This sort of evolution & adaptation is entirely observable and genetically possible.
Not in 5000+ years of recorded human history, or in the "billions" of years of evolution history, is there ANY evidence of transitional life forms from one kind to another. PERIOD! They do not, can not, will not exist! Fish do not become mammals, birds do not become reptiles do not become warm-blooded sapiens, do not become humans, ad infinitum. This would be known as "macro-evolution".
The genetic "blueprint" in DNA is so specialized within each "kind", that it actually PREVENTS macro-evolution from occurring! That's why certain "species" (not a science in itself) cannot cross-breed! Almighty YHWH designed it as such...
The political & religious ramifications of evolutionary science are far more faith-driven than Biblical creationism is. It takes more faith than I've got to believe the preposterous claims of the evolutionists. And, when their claims don't fit their established timetables, they merely add a few more "billion" years.
Time after time, age after age, GOD & His Word prove true. Man's word is ever subject to change...

US scientists defend Darwin from attacks on evolution

US scientists defend Darwin from attacks on evolution AFP – Mugs depicting the evolution of man are pictured at British naturalist Charles Darwin's home, Down …

CHICAGO (AFP) – While the rest of the world feted the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, US scientists were forced to defend the theory of evolution from a skeptical public and a concerted attack campaign.

Top researchers gathered in Chicago presented papers showing how evolution can be witnessed in everything from the genetic similarities between humans and Neanderthals to the way planets form and crows use tools to catch bugs.

"Evolution is not an idea. It's a fact," James McCarthy, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science said Thursday at the launch of a conference whose theme celebrated Darwin's work.

"It's impossible to deny evolution: the development of drug resistant microbes, pesticide resistant insects, there are abundant examples in ordinary life."

But the message has not gotten through to the US public.

Just 40 percent of Americans say they believe in the theory of evolution, according to a Gallup poll published Wednesday.

And previous polls taken over the past decade have consistently found that between 44 and 47 percent believe God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years or so.

"It's a uniquely American problem," McCarthy said.

Evolution is not well taught in US schools and many religious groups advocate a literal interpretation of the Bible.

One such group, which runs a 27 million dollar "Creation Museum" in Kentucky where animatronics dinosaurs frolic with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, is hosting a free conference this weekend refuting evolution.

There are many more working behind the scenes to challenge or limit the teaching of evolution in the classroom, said Eugenie Scott, director of the National Center for Science Education.

"There has been a concerted effort by a pretty well funded movement to educate the public that evolution is weak science, and scientists are giving up on it and making the argument that you have to choose between evolution and religion," Scott told AFP.

The vast anti-evolution movement has developed over the decades, but has been sharply drawn in the courts since the famous 1925 case when a young biology teacher, John Scopes, was put on trial for teaching evolutionary theory in Dayton, Tennessee.

It was not until 1968 that the Supreme Court struck down an Arkansas law making it a crime to teach evolution and ruled that it was unconstitutional to ban the teaching of evolution under the powers of the separation of religion and state.

In 1987, the Supreme Court then ruled it was against the constitution to force creationism to be taught in schools, as that would be promoting religion in the state education system.

In the last decade, a number of attempts have been made to promote the teaching of "intelligent design" -- the contention that life is too complex to have originated without a creator -- as an alternative to evolution.

That theory has also been unable to pass the religious test in the courts, and so anti-evolutionists are instead trying to force teachers to allow for "criticism" of controversial science.

An "academic freedom" bill was passed in Louisiana last year and five other states are currently considering similar legislation, Scott said.

"The latest strategy is not to promote the frank teaching of intelligent design, but to sneak it in through the back door," she said in a telephone interview.

"In the biology business we'd call that adaptation - if nothing else evolves, the creationists do. They're always coming up with ways to subvert evolution."

Follow-up: More Bullies in the Pot

As follow-up to yesterday's "Who Bullies the Bullies?", this news horror ought to rattle your cage to the very core...
It goes to show how corrupt our entire system has become. Our judges, lawyers, police & lawmakers make the news regularly with all manner of sordid scandals; graft, prostitution, homosexuality, bribery, falsehood. If this sort of evil, malicious, & wicked heart resides in our Congress (mostly lawyers), judicial & legal system (former & still lawyers) which we only find out about every once in awhile, how MUCH MORE still lies uncovered? Remember the iceberg is 90% underwater...

In this instance, nearly 2000 of our children have now been victims and witnesses to the audacity of deceit in our government. What message and example will take root in their young minds & grow to maturity? From here on out they will know that the persons defending, prosecuting, judging & governing them are worse criminals than the defendants themselves!
More horrifying is the fact these judges only face a max. 7 years incarceration for ruining lives for perhaps all ETERNITY! How many of these children will grow up career criminals because they now believe sin has no real penalty?
"The transgression of the wicked says...there is no fear of God before his eyes." Ps 36:1, Rom 3:18
"every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Gen 6:5
"For the wages of sin is death..." Rom 6:23

U.S. judges admit to jailing children for money

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Two judges pleaded guilty on Thursday to accepting more than $2.6 million from a private youth detention center in Pennsylvania in return for giving hundreds of youths and teenagers long sentences.

Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan of the Court of Common Pleas in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, entered plea agreements in federal court in Scranton admitting that they took payoffs from PA Childcare and a sister company, Western PA Childcare, between 2003 and 2006.

"Your statement that I have disgraced my judgeship is true," Ciavarella wrote in a letter to the court. "My actions have destroyed everything I worked to accomplish and I have only myself to blame."

Conahan, who along with Ciavarella faces up to seven years in prison, did not make any comment on the case.

When someone is sent to a detention center, the company running the facility receives money from the county government to defray the cost of incarceration. So as more children were sentenced to the detention center, PA Childcare and Western PA Childcare received more money from the government, prosecutors said.

Teenagers who came before Ciavarella in juvenile court often were sentenced to detention centers for minor offenses that would typically have been classified as misdemeanors, according to the Juvenile Law Center, a Philadelphia nonprofit group.

One 17-year-old boy was sentenced to three months' detention for being in the company of another minor caught shoplifting.

Others were given similar sentences for "simple assault" resulting from a schoolyard scuffle that would normally draw a warning, a spokeswoman for the Juvenile Law Center said.

The Constitution guarantees the right to legal representation in U.S. courts. But many of the juveniles appeared before Ciavarella without an attorney because they were told by the probation service that their minor offenses didn't require one.

Marsha Levick, chief counsel for the Juvenile Law Center, estimated that of approximately 5,000 juveniles who came before Ciavarella from 2003 and 2006, between 1,000 and 2,000 received excessively harsh detention sentences. She said the center will sue the judges, PA Childcare and Western PA Childcare for financial compensation for their victims.

"That judges would allow their greed to trump the rights of defendants is just obscene," Levick said.

The judges attempted to hide their income from the scheme by creating false records and routing payments through intermediaries, prosecutors said.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court removed Ciavarella and Conahan from their duties after federal prosecutors filed charges on January 26. The court has also appointed a judge to review all the cases involved.

Who bullies the bullies?

Watching the proceedings on C-Span can be as hilarious as watching old re-runs of the "Honeymooners". (An old Jackie Gleason comedy show for you younguns)
Sure, we're all mad at the shenanigans of Wall St., and would love the opportunity to dress them down. But, Congressional lawmakers take it to a whole new level. The sad irony of it all is that the pot is lambasting the kettle for being black. Year after year, session after session, Congress wastes, squanders, misappropriates and even steals billions of our dollars under the auspices of the public trust. And, no one ever gets the chance to give them their comeuppance.
Sitting there as god, judge, jury & executioner, Congress wields extraordinary power over us. I don't begrudge criticism & correction when it's due, and Almighty God has given me plenty in my years upon the earth: But, our legislative Branch is a petulant child out of control that we as voters have no recourse or wisdom to oust, save every 2-4 years. Even that rarely works or remedies the stupid disease that infects everyone who goes to Washington.
In nearly all but a few individuals, the inebriation of power & money overtakes politicians there within their first year. The heady swirl gives them the same exhilaration akin to an addicted gambler on a roll. Expediency replaces principle, if any ever really existed; Pork replaces practicality, and falsehood trumps truth. No wonder we're in such a mess...

Lawmakers berate Wall St. CEOs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Wall Street bank executives squirmed under a public scolding in the U.S. Congress on Wednesday over how they used $176 billion in bailout money without noticeably improving the battered economy.

"America doesn't trust you anymore," Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano told eight bank chief executives during six hours of congressional questioning on the troubled bank bailout plan.

The lawmakers reflected public outrage over the failure so far of a $700 billion financial bailout program to stop the economic free fall and growing taxpayer fatigue as the price tag for rescuing the economy grows.

They demanded to know what the banks have done with the bailout money, given an ongoing credit crisis that has added to the country's deteriorating economy.

The CEOs, who as the titans of the once seemingly invincible capitalist society earned a total of $118 million in 2007, struck a contrite tone.

"I feel more like corporal of the universe, not captain of the universe at this moment," said Ken Lewis, CEO of Bank of America, as he came under intense questioning from California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.

The CEOs argued they had responsibly used the billions in taxpayer dollars to increase lending, not to pay executives, lobbyists or shareholder dividends.

Three of the biggest lenders to consumers -- Citigroup, Bank of America and JPMorgan -- said they made $340 billion in new loans in the fourth quarter of 2008.

British bank executives were also on the hot seat Wednesday as a parliamentary inquiry into that country's banking crisis continued.

And the Irish government beefed up its bailout package Wednesday with a pledge to inject $9 billion into two top banks in return for guarantees on lending.

QUESTIONS ON PAY

The eight U.S. CEOs, questioned about their own income, said they had received 2008 salaries ranging from $600,000 to $1.5 million and had not received bonuses.

All but one reported that their companies own or lease aircraft, prompting California Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman to advise them to give up the expensive planes.

"You could sell them," he said.

Prodded by New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks on whether Americans deserved an apology for lax loan standards that fueled the now-collapsed debt bubble, Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack spoke up.

"I think the entire industry bears responsibility, and I'm sorry for it," said Mack, who earned $9.2 million in 2007.

Wednesday's hearing came a day after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner failed to inspire market confidence over the government's financial bailout plans and sent stocks tumbling.

Bank shares traded higher Wednesday as bargain-hunters moved in after Tuesday's 14 percent sell-off, and added to their gains on hopes a separate $789 billion stimulus package moving through Congress will reinvigorate the economy.

More so than other lawmakers, Capuano expressed frustration.

"You come to us today on your bicycles after buying Girl Scout cookies and helping out Mother Theresa and telling us, 'We're sorry, we didn't mean it, we won't do it again, trust us.' Well, I have some people in my constituency that actually robbed some of your banks and they say the same thing," he said.

By the end of the day, Lewis' patience appeared to be running thin as he was asked about Bank of America's capital levels and solvency. "To ask me that question is amazing."

PROTESTERS

Outside the building where the hearing took place, about a dozen protesters taunted Lewis. "Hey, Ken Lewis feel our pain," they chanted.

Democratic Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, opened the proceedings by telling the CEOs they needed to understand Americans' anger and frustration and cooperate with lawmakers willingly, "not grudgingly, not doing the minimum."

New York Democratic Rep. Gary Ackerman said that in "the real world," people cannot get loans to buy cars or homes or send children to college.

"It seems to me and some of us that this money hasn't reached the street, that you haven't loaned it out," he said.

Democratic Rep. Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania was equally baffled, telling the executives that if their banks did not use the money, "Please find a way to return that money before you leave town."

South Carolina Republican Rep. Gresham Barrett said his constituents "simply have not seen the evidence that the money you were given is working or making their lives better."

BONUS DIET

The CEOs reported they had forsworn bonuses for now.

"I've told my board of directors that my salary should be $1 per year with no bonus until we return to profitability," said Vikram Pandit of Citigroup Inc.

But Frank demanded why they needed bonuses at all when a good salary would do. New York state officials say financial companies doled out $18.4 billion in bonuses last year.

"This notion that you need some special incentive to do the right thing troubles people," Frank said.

"It's complicated," Mack replied, citing the risks involved, the global nature of the banking business and the size of the companies. "If you gave me no bonus for the best year, I'd still be here."

The executives also said they are embracing some of the reforms proposed for the badly crippled U.S. financial system.

Jamie Dimon, head of JPMorgan Chase & Co, said he is endorsing a proposal to create a systemic risk regulator to help oversee U.S. markets.

"This would allow us to begin to address some of the underlying weaknesses in our system and fill the gaps in regulation that contributed to the current situation," he said. "We stand ready to work with you on the range of issues confronting the financial services sector and our economy."

Others testifying included Lloyd Blankfein, CEO of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Robert Kelly of Bank of New York Mellon Corp, Ronald Logue of State Street Corp and John Stumpf of Wells Fargo & Co.

GOD's Name in Vain?

"You shall not take the name of the Lord your GOD in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain." Ex 20:7
Over the years, everytime I hear in conversation or media the number of instances when a person says, "Oh, my G--!", I cringe. Even the news garners its share of blurbs by reporters & anchors. Politicians seem to throw it about freely as well. Daily, the bombardment is all around us.
The usage of GOD, or God, whichever the case may be, in Americana, is beyond vainness, it's proliferation. It's become a generic word without meaning, without thought, without respect. Even when public prayers are offered, no one has a clue as to what God, who He is, or if there's really One to hear these prayers. Often, those who call themselves "Christian" seem to make prayer to just some generalized deity. How should we pray or call upon the LORD?
Yeshua (Jesus) and the Scriptures say, "Whatsoever all of you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If all of you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." Jn 14:13-14
"Truly, truly, I say to you, Whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give you." Jn 16:23
"so as the rest of men may seek the Lord, even all the nations on whom My name has been called, says the Lord, who is doing all these things." Amos 9:11,12
"For whosoever shall call upon the NAME of the Lord shall be saved." Rom 10:13
No ambiguity here...He couldn't be more specific. We should not be so ignorant. Either we stand for Christ, or fall for the world.

Thousands want prayers 'in Jesus' name'
'Since when is it OK to be prejudiced against Christians? We are good people'

February 10, 2009, 10:22 pm Eastern

By Bob Unruh, WND

Gov. Tim Kaine

Thousands of petition signatures are being delivered to Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine from citizens asking him to support legislation that would provide state patrol chaplains the right to pray as their conscience dictates.

"To put a limitation on prayer is an outrage!" wrote one petition signer. "This country was founded on Christian principles and to ban certain aspects of prayer is a disgrace."

Kaine previously expressed support for an administrative decision in his state intended to prevent the chaplains from praying "in Jesus' name."

The issue arose from a lawsuit against the city of Fredericksburg for banning a councilman from concluding his routine council prayers – offered on a rotating basis among members – "in Jesus' name."

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra O'Connor concluded in an intermediary court opinion that Turner's prayers were "government speech" and therefore subject to censorship by the city.

Now the nearly 7,000 signatures on a growing list of concerned citizens are being delivered to Kaine by former Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt, who was removed from the U.S. military over the same offense of praying "in Jesus' name."

"Sir, as you're aware, the Virginia House just passed HR2314 by a 66-30 vote to reinstate Virginia State Trooper Chaplains' right to pray publicly according to conscience, including prayers 'in Jesus name,'" an accompanying letter said.

"You may be tempted to veto such a reasonable pro-faith bill, however, attached is a spreadsheet with the names of 6805 people (two-thirds are Virginia citizens) who signed our petition to you, asking you to reinstate your police chaplains' right to pray publicly 'in Jesus' name.' We have thousands more coming in by direct mail this month," the letter said.

Fourteen Democrats joined 50 Republicans and two independents in approving the legislative plan in the state House of Delegates. A separate proposal failed in the state Senate, but the House of Delegates plan procedurally soon could be in that chamber for consideration.

Some of the signers had to-the-point comments for the governor, including:

  • "Since when is it OK to be prejudiced against Christians? We are good people."

  • "Sir, I will pray in Jesus' name for you and our state. Do the right thing by our State Troopers and the Chaplains."

  • "Someday we will all have to give an account before God for the things we have done while here on earth. What will you say?"

  • "Please remember the examples of other Virginians like Patrick Henry, George Mason, and Thomas Jefferson who, though different in opinions, understood the importance of religious freedom. Virginia's Declaration of Religious Freedom was one of the first government documents to codify this essential human right. … PLEASE, don't go down in history as the man who undermined Virginia's heritage and leadership on this issue."

  • "I am tired of Christians being treated like second-rate citizens."

  • "Thank you Gov. Kaine for stirring up Christians like myself who otherwise become complacent in our faith. It must be a very difficult job in which you try to please everyone. Take heart Gov. Kaine there is only one that you need to please and that is GOD in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will keep you in my prayers and hope that you will find courage to acknowledge Jesus Christ as the author of truth before all men and reinstate the State Police Chaplains acknowledging Jesus Christ."

  • "The Founding Fathers are very disappointed in Virginia."

  • "Shame on you, Gov. Kaine."

  • "This is outrageous!!"

State Sen. Steve Martin supported the Senate plan, telling committee members, "No one should have dictated or restricted by any government entity how they might pray."

The state attorney general's office has determined that the plan is constitutional.

Members of the House of Delegates are working on House Bill 2314, which does not specify a particular religion. It states Virginia State Police officials cannot "prescribe, proscribe, regulate, limit or otherwise dictate the religious content of the volunteer chaplains' expression of religious beliefs, prayers, invocations, benedictions, spiritual counseling or spiritual guidance."

The bill was introduced by Delegate Charles W. Carrico Sr., a former state trooper.

When the rule change was imposed, six of the chaplains resigned their responsibilities rather than be forced to pray without mentioning Jesus. At the time, Kaine said he didn't need the name of Jesus in his prayers.

"It doesn't diminish my ability to worship my God, to pray to the Father or the Lord without mentioning Jesus Christ," he said.

WND reported earlier when a coalition of pastors wrote to Kaine seeking a change in the policy.

"Six chaplains lost their jobs as chaplains, having effectively 'turned in their chaplain badge' in protest over the governor's 'non-sectarian' prayer policy," Klingenschmitt reported at the time. "They are no longer permitted to perform chaplain duties, until they comply with the prayer policy and get reinstated."

Klingenschmitt said the chaplains "were given direct verbal orders to stop praying 'in Jesus name' … [and] faced with a choice between disobeying orders and violating their conscience by publicly denying the name of Jesus Christ, they resigned."

That's exactly what persecution is, he insisted.

Klingenschmitt, whose battle with the military over his use of the phrase remains in court where he's seeking reinstatement, said he "cannot believe we live in a society where government officials literally dictate the content of a chaplain's prayers and dare to punish or exclude chaplains who pray 'in Jesus name.'"

Is The Sky Falling?

Everyone across America asks, "Are we at the bottom?", "Is it going to get worse?", "Is this GOD's judgment upon America?", or they're scoffing, "It's a cyclical downturn, it had to happen. We're going to see recovery in the second half of '09." "Boom times are just around the corner." Who or what can you believe? You can & must believe GOD & His Word. Anything less is temporal imaginations and eternal separation apart from GOD's Kingdom and assurance in Christ.
Is GOD vengeful or loving? Temperamental or consistent? Faithful or abandoning? Spiteful or consoling? To our human minds with its faulty logic, reasoning & limitations, GOD may seem to be all of these from time to time. But, as well you should ever discover, GOD is too big to fit in your box, or mine either. It is only through the revelations of Scripture that we even begin to get a grasp of GOD's enormity, His mercy, His grace, His judgment, and His plan for mankind. And as for His humanity, we see Him in His earthly eternal form, Adonai Yeshua ha' Meshiach, Lord Jesus the Christ. But, HOW do we look upon Him? "For a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. There is no end to the increase of His government and of peace on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it, and to sustain it with justice and with righteousness, from now and forever." Is 9:6-7 "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS" Rev 19:16
"Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" Jn 1:29
"we wait for the blessed hope and the glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Yeshua the Holy One" Titus 2:13
Only then do our hearts & minds transform and adhere by the Spirit of Truth, the Spirit of Holiness, the Spirit of Life, the Spirit of Adoption, the Spirit of Faith, the Spirit of Promise, the Spirit of Glory...all of whom is the Spirit of Christ. (John 15:26, Rom 1:4, Rom 8:2, Rom 8:15, Eph 1:13, I Pet 4:14, Rom 8:9, I Pet 1:11)

It's fair & accurate to say I use this blog as my podium to preach & present Christ. For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes. (Rom 1:16) It is my earnest prayer that all who would partake here will come away with a stronger, more dedicated faith & resolve in Adonai Yeshua. It is also a medium to present our world today scrutinized with GOD's eyes through the lens of Scripture. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is indispensable for teaching (doctrine & prophecy), for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the person of God may be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work." (II Tim 3:16)
It's also a call to the redeemed to wake up from their slumber & sloth. While I firmly believe the End Times are nearing, many have & would state the End Times have been declared in nearly every generation since Christ's appearance. Yes, I've heard & read them all. But, the one stark & glaring reality that none of these generations ever had before...is the nation of ISRAEL. The re-establishment of Israel and its role in the End Times are such long prophesied events which should
quicken every believers heart & mind to be about the Master's business. We need & must pay close attention to what goes on with Israel, and GOD's dealings with them...today. The drum roll has started, and will ever increase in frequency and intensity. What does this mean for us in America? It means we must decrease. Scripture states Israel will have no ally save YHWH when her enemies seek to make war against her in these Last Days. America will turn her back on Israel as well as to YHWH already. She will side with the "Kingdom of the North". (Dan 11:6)
More likely than not, America will fall subservient to this revived Roman Empire. This means major upheaval to everything we have known in our land for the past 250+ years. We see it happening right before our very eyes.
This is only the beginning...

Israeli election battle seen too close to call

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel's national election is likely to be a cliff-hanger, pollsters said on Monday, on the eve of a vote right-winger Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party had been forecast to win.

"The trend we've seen the last few days indicates a very close battle," said pollster Rafi Smith of the Smith Research Center. "No one has jumped ahead and it's tough to call."

Likud has been the front-runner since November, after Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni of the ruling, centrist Kadima party forced a new election by failing to form a new government following Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's resignation in a corruption scandal.

Smith said the gap between Likud and its closest rival, Kadima, has narrowed, with Avigdor Lieberman of the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party drawing support from traditional Likud backers.

"At least 10 percent of voters are still undecided, and they will determine the outcome," Smith said.

Pollster Dori Shadmon of the TNS Israel institute said with about a dozen parties in serious contention for seats in the 120-member parliament, predicting a result was difficult.

"It's a close fight and it's still open," Shadmon said.

The election race has focused on security issues in the wake of Israel's 22-day Gaza offensive.

"There hasn't been much excitement about this election. They haven't really been talking about the issues people care about," said Alex Mayorenko, 22, a Jerusalem resident.

"There are only small distinctions between the candidates, not enough to really make a difference."

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinians said they harbored few hopes the Israeli election heralded a change for the better.

"We have tried the Likud, Kadima and Labor parties, and each one of them obstructs the peace process in its own way," said Imad Saify, 38, from Ramallah.

STRATEGY CHANGE

Leading candidates have stepped up efforts to try to woo those still on the fence, mostly by attacking rivals.

Netanyahu's camp, which has watched its numbers steadily drop, reversed its strategy of laying low by describing the popular Lieberman and his fiery rhetoric as a passing phenomenon and a wasted vote.

Lieberman, who immigrated from the Soviet Union in 1978, wants to trade land on which many of Israel's 1.5 million Arab citizens live for West Bank Jewish settlements in any peace deal with the Palestinians.

Critics have described that policy as anti-Arab, along with his demand that all Israelis be required to swear allegiance to the Jewish state in order to vote or hold elected office.

Livni, who hopes to become the first female prime minister since Golda Meir in the 1970s, has painted Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak of Labor, both former prime ministers, as failures.

Israeli President Shimon Peres chided candidates for focusing on personality issues rather than on matters at the core of the Israeli-Arab conflict.

"The country's burning issues weren't properly addressed or fully given voice in the election campaign," Peres told Israel Radio. "There is always a personal side to elections ... what has surprised me is the proportion between the two."

In Tuesday's election, the Knesset's seats are allocated by proportional representation to national party lists.

Once the results are in, Peres consults with party leaders and picks a legislator to try to form a government.

Traditionally, the task goes to the leader of the party that wins the most votes and he or she has 42 days to put together an administration.

In a last-minute move, Olmert, who remains caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed, endorsed Livni on camera for the first time.

Livni had called for Olmert's resignation after the 2006 Lebanon war that many Israelis saw as a failure. Political sources said their relationship has been rocky since.

In Florida, Despair and Foreclosures

Gloria Chilson in the yard of the house where she lived for 18 years. She and her husband recently lost the home to foreclosure.

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — Desperation has moved into this once-middle-class exurb of Fort Myers, where hammers used to pound.

Its straight-ahead stare was hidden amid the chatter of 221 families waiting for free bread at Faith Lutheran Church on a recent Friday morning; and it appeared a block away a few days earlier, as laid-off construction workers in flannel shirts scavenged through trash bags at a home foreclosure, grabbing wires, CDs, anything that could be sold.

“I knew it was coming,” said Gloria Chilson, 56, the former owner of the house, as she watched strangers pick through her belongings. “You take what you can; you try not to care.”

Welcome to the American dream in high reverse. Lehigh Acres is one of countless sprawling exurbs that the housing boom drastically reshaped, and now the bust is testing whether the experience of shared struggle will pull people together or tear them apart.

The changes in these mostly unincorporated areas outside cities like Charlotte, N.C., Las Vegas and Sacramento have been swift and vivid. Their best economic times have been immediately followed by their worst, as they have generally been the last to crest and the first to crash.

In Lehigh Acres, homes are selling at 80 percent off their peak prices. Only two years after there were more jobs than people to work them, fast-food restaurants are laying people off or closing. Crime is up, school enrollment is down, and one in four residents received food stamps in December, nearly a fourfold increase since 2006.

President Obama is scheduled to visit Fort Myers on Tuesday to promote his economic stimulus plan. But residents here tend to view it as the equivalent of an herbal remedy — it can’t hurt but it probably won’t heal. Instead, in church groups and offices, people call for “industry” and repeat one telling question: “What do we want to be when we grow up?”

“That’s one of the things we struggle with: What is our identity?” said Joseph Whalen, 37, president of the Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce. “We don’t want to be the bedroom community of southwest Florida; we don’t want to be the foreclosure capital.”

A Legacy of the ’50s

Lehigh Acres, like much of Florida and many suburbs nationwide, was born with speculation in its DNA.

The area got its start in the 1950s when a Chicago pest control baron, Lee Ratner, and several partners bought thousands of acres of farmland and plotted about 100,000 lots. With Fort Myers, 15 miles to the west, developers left little room for schools, parks or even businesses.

What they sold was sun and quiet living.

“They used to bring 20 busloads a day,” said Bob Elliott, a former salesman for Mr. Ratner’s company who struck out on his own in 1982. “We had 300 customers, seven days a week.”

By 2000, the lots had been sold, but most stayed empty. Only about 30,000 people were living in an area roughly four times the size of Manhattan. The builders really started to arrive in 2004, setting up model homes on Lee Boulevard next to Mr. Elliott’s office with the faded wooden sign that said “$50 lots.”

Bill Spikowski, a city planning consultant in Fort Myers, said that because Lehigh Acres had so many parcels and few restrictions on what could be built, smaller companies battled for customers. From 2004 to the end of 2006, developers completed 13,183 units in Lehigh Acres — nearly doubling the total stock of 15,216 that existed in 2000, according to Lee County figures.

Residents remember the boom for its noise, with dump trucks lining the streets and power tools heard in nearly every neighborhood. Housing prices doubled, then tripled, and jobs were plentiful, nearly all of them tied to real estate.

Signs of trouble were ignored. “Sometimes houses would sell three or four times in a few months, and no one would move in,” Mr. Elliott said.

Then in 2007, it all went quiet. Houses stopped selling. Foreclosures multiplied. The median home price in the Fort Myers area dropped to $215,200 in December 2007, from a peak of $322,300 in December 2005. It had fallen to $106,900 two months ago.

Work disappeared with the profits. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, Lee County lost a higher percentage of jobs (8.8 percent) from June 2007 to June 2008 than any other county in the nation. Unemployment in the county rose to 9.8 percent in November, from 3.5 percent in March 2007.

Lehigh Acres was particularly hard hit because it relied on construction. This was where the carpenters and exterminators of southwest Florida lived because it was more affordable or close to work. And by last spring, life as they knew it had come to an end.

The Downward Spiral

Trinkets for $1 were an early sign of trouble. Early last year, garage sales and estate auctions became more common in Lehigh Acres as families sold what they could to survive. No one seemed interested in buying whole houses, and foreclosures soon gave way to empty homes that became magnets for crime.

Thieves stole air conditioner parts for scrap. And on distant roads with only a few new homes and faded blue street signs from the ’50s — on Narcissus Boulevard, on Prospect Avenue — drug dealers moved in.

In 2007 and 2008, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department shut down more than 100 houses in Lehigh Acres where marijuana was being grown. In 2008, the police confiscated nearly 3,000 plants valued at nearly $7 million.

Last winter, Charlotte Rae Nicely, executive director of Lehigh Community Services, noticed something else. More people were going hungry. Demand was increasing at the food pantry she runs at a nondescript office park, with dozens of new faces appearing week after week, even as the population was declining.

Wondering what other social service agencies were experiencing, she decided to form a group that would coordinate assistance. It was the first sign that Lehigh Acres was fighting the recession in an organized way, and the group’s mission appeared in its name: Team Rescue.

The monthly meetings now include about a half-dozen churches, nonprofit groups, business owners and representatives from county government, including the sheriff’s office.

Discussion at one recent gathering centered on the host of troubles that follow unemployment — issues that until recently had rarely been seen in new American suburbs. Hunger was chief among them.

The organizations offering food in Lehigh Acres have seen demand increase by as much as 75 percent in the last year. And the people being served are no longer just the chronic poor.

The line at Faith Lutheran included a mix of ages, races and former income levels.

Luis Oquendo, 38, said he had been showing up for his weekly bread allotment since last fall, after full-time construction work disappeared.

Fred Csifortos, 62, a retiree surviving on $650 a month in disability payments, said the free food left more money for his medications.

Megan Brown, standing in line with her well-dressed daughters, Kayley, 2, and Sydney, 4, had come because she feared the worst. Her husband still had his job, she said, “but things are getting more and more tight.”

Team Rescue, of which Faith Lutheran is a member, considers itself successful, not just because it has helped more families but also because organizers believe that the links they are forming will be the foundation of a tighter community.

Ms. Nicely said she was especially encouraged by the Sheriff’s Department’s new “weed and seed” program, intended to revive Lehigh’s most troubled neighborhoods by involving residents in community policing and cleanup.

And home sales in Lee County are picking up, running roughly even with foreclosures.

“Six months ago, you might get one out of 20 houses with a multiple offer,” said Kevin Williamson, a real estate agent who has lived in Lehigh Acres for 22 years. “A couple of weeks ago, I had one with 13 offers.”

But no one here would describe Lehigh Acres as out of the woods. Real estate agents said the homes that are selling here typically go for only about $45,000, a third of what they cost to build. They predict that foreclosures will continue to keep prices low for two more years.

Job growth is also still nonexistent. Randy Burns, 50, the gregarious owner of Lehigh Discount Furniture, says he now receives 15 to 20 calls a week from people asking him to buy their furniture or help them move out of town — and he said he planned to leave, too.

“Until there’s jobs and foreclosures stop,” he said, “nothing’s going to change.”

The Latest Battle

Creating a community in a deepening recession, many here now say, feels harder than dealing with a Category 5 hurricane. Panic is a powerful headwind.

Voters defeated a proposal last year to incorporate Lehigh Acres, partly because residents feared higher taxes. And Team Rescue, for all its strength as a unified front, is still trying to figure out how to curb the spread of desperation.

Most recently the group has been struggling with a growing wave of families that either visit multiple food pantries using aliases or return the food to supermarkets for money or other items.

Ms. Nicely, at Lehigh Community Services, said that in November she started using a magic marker to blacken UPC symbols on cans so grocery stores would not accept them as returns.

“We even had to do that on the toys for Christmas,” Ms. Nicely said. Without such limits, she said, the neediest families might not be served.

Still, she often feels torn, saying, “I can’t be sure I wouldn’t do the same thing if I was a single parent and my kids were hungry.”

“The needs are so strong now,” she added, noting that there were more canned peas than peanut butter on her shelves because of growing demand. “They’ve never been this big before.”

A similar struggle between cohesion and chaos was also evident at a recent evangelical men’s meeting, where 8 of the 15 members said they had been laid off in the last year. Even as the group had helped some of the men cope, others said their families had been broken up by the stress.

And then there is Ms. Chilson. She lost her house partly because of the boom (if not for easy credit, she might not have refinanced her mortgage a few years ago), the bust (which led to her husband being laid off from his pest control job) and overspending (which led to more than $20,000 in credit card debt).

She and her husband had lived in their simple green ranch house for 18 years, and the night they were kicked out, they stayed across the street with an elderly man whom Ms. Chilson had often helped with his medication.

Ms. Chilson put her couch in an old friend’s house, her frozen steaks in another. And as she scrambled to find work and a place to rent, she decided to thank those she could.

At one point, she tried to vacuum a neighbor’s house as an act of appreciation.

But the vacuum stayed quiet. Ms. Chilson discovered that the electricity had been turned off because the bill had not been paid. Any day now, she said, her neighbor will be leaving Lehigh Acres with all the others.
